Breaking away from the dive watch stereotype. The Grandval Atlantique Diver.

When I hear the term "dive watch" the first watch that pops into my head is none other than the iconic Rolex Submariner. Looking into the future, almost all dive watches tend to borrow aesthetic similarities and ideas from the Submariner, until now. It always brings a smile to my face when I see a microbrand innovating and making a name for themselves in the horological world and creating timepieces that are different from those in their competitive space. Today we take a look at a timepiece that is designed and assembled in France, is powered by a Swiss movement and has absolutely gorgeous unique styling that caught my eye immediately. Let's take a look at Grandval Watches and the Atlantique Diver series.

In the era of micro and independent watch brands, it's hard to keep up since there are so many. In saying that, it is also difficult to find a true microbrand that designs and creates their own timepieces through the whole process and doesn't use cookie cutter models from chinese manufacturers. Even some brands that state they are a microbrand use the terms "luxury" or "high end" when in fact those statements couldn't be any less true. Brands that have to use the terms "luxury" or "high end" with their product pitch should be avoided in my personal opinion. Grandval is the complete opposite of that. Grandval watches are designed and created by Mr. Thomas Fontaine for the soul purpose to create a new and beautiful take on a modern dive watch with precision and perfect material choices and movements.

When I first had my eyes on the Atlantique Diver I noticed it's stunning modern-industrial aesthetics and design language. From just a visual perspective this piece had me completely sold and wanting one for myself. However, if you look at the specs this piece is even more special than just a pretty face (no pun intended). The beautiful 44mm 316L stainless steel case which transitions from high polish to beautiful brushed steel, a screw down crown at 4 o'clock with a screw down case back for the 200m water resistance rating, domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating and a 120 click unidirectional rotating bezel. The unique part about this piece is due to its shape, there are no lugs. The case sits completely flat adding a very unique feel on wrist. In all dial variations, the watch is extremely readable due to its size, the AR coating on the sapphire crystal and its very bold markers around the bezel and the indices. With all variations, there is also a symmetrical date window at 6 o'clock which adds even more uniformity to this piece.

This watch is completely designed and assembled in France, but is brought to life thanks to the STP1-11 Swiss made automatic movement. This is a more cost effective 26 jewel Swiss self-winding movement, but has the reliability of high end in-house movements, has manual winding capabilities, bidirectional rotor and a stop second feature to ensure the most accurate time keeping possible.

Overall the story is a short one. If you're looking for a gorgeous and unique dive watch that has great materials, an amazing movement and comes from a brand that was started by a man who is truly inspired by and loves watches, the Atlantique diver is the choice for you.
